What are Antioxidants
Antioxidants are a group of nutrients that reduce the risk of many chronic disorders caused by free radical damage. Free radicals are produced during normal oxygen metabolism and from exposure to toxins and pollutants that cause serious damage to the structure of cells, DNA, enzymes, lipids and proteins. Free radicals are produced naturally during normal processes, such as exercise and digestion, antioxidants defend the body against free radicals.
Exessive Free radical damage is implicated in cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s, cataracts, macular degeneration, arthritis, asthma, hypertension, atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease to name but a few. Free radicals also may drive the aging process. Some antioxidants are made in the body such as certain enzymes, coenzymes, and sulfur-containing compounds such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD). It is often recommended to supplement with the building blocks of these important enzymes such as manganese, copper and zinc for superoxide dismutase and selenium for glutathione peroxidase. Most Antioxidants are not made within the body and are not sufficient to meet our needs so need to be supplemented. Encouraging evidence is growing that people who supplement with antioxidants are more vigorous and less prone to disease.
Antioxidant Complex Overview
Our Antioxidant Complex is a truely comprehensive formula comprised of the most powerful antioxidants, which work synergistically more beneficial together than they are alone.
Our Antioxidant Complex includes the popular staples of beta-carotene, vitamin C & E, and selenium, but also includes N-Acetyl cysteine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and herbs like, rosemary leaf, tumeric, garlic, milk thistle, hawthorn, quercitin, black pepper, grape seed, and green tea antioxidants, that contain flavonoids with powerful antioxidant potential. Our Antioxidant Complex is available in Post-Consumer Recycled brown bottles of 120 tablets.
Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene)
Beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant member of the carotenoid family, is a compound that provides yellow, orange and red pigmentation of fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C has is well known and researched for it's powerful antioxidant abilities. It is the most powerful water soluble antioxidant, which neutralizes potentially harmful reactions in the blood and the fluids surrounding the cells. Vitamin C also protects other antioxidants, such as Vitamin E.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a potent fat soluble antioxidant that prevents the oxidation of lipids. Cell membranes are composed of lipids, vital to the stability and integrity of cellular tissues and membranes. Vitamin E's effectiveness is increased when taken with other antioxidants, like Beta Carotene, Vitamin C and Selenium. There are numerous studies that support the claim that Vitamin E is beneficial to cardiovascular health.
Zinc
Zinc has antioxidant properties of its own and is important for the proper maintenance of Vitamin E levels in the blood, and to improve the activity of vitamin A. More importtantly it is key in the manufacture within the body of the powerful antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD is an enzyme made by the body that revitalizes cells and reduces the rate of cell destruction.
Selenium
Selenium is a trace mineral and potent antioxidant which works synergistically with Vitamin E to support the immune and cardiovascular systems. Selenium is a very important component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which works with Vitamin E to help prevent free radical damage to cell membranes. Selenium also protects the body form heavy metal toxicity.
Copper
Copper is a component of the enzyme superoxide dismutase, a very important antioxidant. It is also a component of the enzyme dopamine beta-hydroxylase, an enzyme that regulates Vitamin C metabolism and the synthesis of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter. It is necessary for the production and function of hemoglobin and is a building block of collagen and elastin.
Manganese
Manganese, along with copper and zinc, is an important component of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. It is also necessary for growth and maintenance of tissues, cartilage and bones. Manganese is a factor in glucose intolereance.
N-Acetyl Cysteine
N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of cysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid. It assists the body in the conversion of cysteine to glutathionine, a powerful antioxidant. NAC assists in liver detoxification of harmful environmental and biological toxins. Studies indicate that it may help to support healthy blood pressure, cholesterol balance and weight
Green Tea
Green tea contains several compounds that have antioxidant properties. The active constituents are the polyphenols called catechins and tannins. The catechin epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) may turn out to be a much more stronger antioxidant than even Vitamin C and E.
Garlic
Garlic has several healing properties, being rich in selenium, it helps the production of the powerful antioxidant glutathione perioxidase. Studies indicate that it supports cardiovascular health. Moreover, certain types of aged garlic have been reported to help protect the liver from potentially harmful chemicals and drugs.
Hawthorn
Hawthorn’s flowers, leaves and berries are all used in herbal supplements. Each is high in flavonoid content, which gives the plant powerful antioxidant properties. Hawthorn contains three groups of compounds, which are key to the plant’s positive effects on the cardiovascular system. These constituent groups are the triterpenoid saponins, the amines and the flavonoids. By inhibiting free radical formation, hawthorn’s antioxidant activity can be beneficial in maintaining healthy heart vessels and promoting overall cardiovascular health.
Milk Thistle
Milk Thistle a member of the sunflower family, has been used to support liver health for more than 2,000 years. Milk Thistle extract includes the anitoxidants, which include silymarin a liver protectant, which protect red blood cell membranes against lipid peroxidation and the break down of the red blood cells. Milk Thistle also may increase the effectiveness of the glutathione in the liver.
Quercetin
Quercetin is a potent bioflavonoid that as an antioxidant may support cardiovascular health. Quercetin protects LDL cholesterol from oxidizing in the arteries and it may guard cellular DNA from free-radical damage.
Red Grape (seed and skin)
The extract from grape seeds and skins is rich in flavonoids which help protect cells from free radical damage. These extracts contain proanthocyanidins which support cardiovascular health by preventing the formation of blood clots, and preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Grape seed and grape skin extracts are known to exert a powerful, positive influence on blood vessels. In the presence of vitamin C and E, proanthocyanidins become even more potent antioxidants. Grape Seed is both water and fat soluble and can therefore penetrate all types of cell membranes delivering powerful antioxidant protection. It is also one of the few antioxidants that can cross the blood brain barrier, potentially supporting healthy brain function.
Rosemary
The antioxidant properties of Rosemary are due to its high concentration of carnosic acid which donates hydrogen to quench free radicals. It then forms carnosol, which in turn forms rosmanol, another antioxidant. Therefore, Rosemary has multiple antioxidant roles.
Turmeric
Turmeric is a member of the ginger family which possesses antioxidant compounds known as curcuminsoids, of which curcumin has been found to be most potent. These compounds help prevent the buildup of excess free radicals. They also neutralize existing free radicals by scavenging them. It also has been shown to support healthy liver function and digestion.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha Lipoic Acid increases glutathione levels and is itself a scavenger of free radicals everywhere in the body and may be is more effective in neutralizing free radicals than the majority of its counterparts.. In addition, it recycles other antioxidants, specifically Vitamin C and Vitamin E, enhancing their potency. Alpha Lipoic Acid is sometimes referred to as a “universal antioxidant” due to having the rare ability to be active in both water and fat in the body; most antioxidants are active in either one or the other.
Black Pepper
Black Pepper contains the active antioxidant piperine, which also gives black pepper its distinctive flavor. Historically it has been used by herbalists to reduce fevers and to treat bronchial complaints. It may support healthy circulation and digestion. Clinical studies conducted on piperine indicate that it may increase the bioavailability of other nutrients and may increase thermogenic activity in the body.
Ginkgo
Ginkgo is well known for its positive effects on brain function and circulation. However, Ginkgo is also full of antioxidants, Vitamin C and carotenoids. Ginkgo possesses flavonoid antioxidants that work synergistically together making Ginkgo one of the most powerful plant-based antioxidants, sometimes referred to as a “super antioxidant”.
