What is Pygeum?
Good 4 Life Pygeum for Men is available as 60 softgels and comes from the bark of the pygeum tree, an evergreen found at higher elevations in central and southern Africa, and is used medicinally for its anti-inflammatory properties particularly in association with urinary tract health and swelling of the prostate.
The prostate gland is a ring shaped gland surrounding the urethra where it exits the bladder. It produces an alkaline liquid which makes up most of the seminal reproductive fluid. As men mature into their 40's, the cells in the prostate gland may become enlarged, (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH). BPH is the non-cancerous enlarging of the prostate which is sometines harmless. Other times however, enlargement of the prostate gland squeezes the urethra to interfere with urinary flow; this in turn can cause urological issues. Pygeum has been used for symptoms associated with mild to moderate cases of BPH. It is critical that a physician must first rule out prostate cancer should symptoms or discomfort arise.
Research reveals that pygeum bark extract has three types of compound which lead to its health promoting properties. Phytosterols, including beta-sitosterol, which have anti-inflammatory effects by interfering with the formation of hormone-like substances in the body that accumulate in the prostate of men with BPH. Pentacyclic terpenes which have an anti-edema, or decongesting, effect. Lastly Ferulic esters found in pygeum indirectly control testosterone activity in the prostate, which may reduce the risk of BPH.
