Ginkgo Biloba is extracted from the leaves of possibly the oldest living tree species (200 million years), and has been used in Chinese medicine for 4,000 years to treat asthma and bronchitis and cardiovascular diseases. It is also the most frequently prescribed medicinal herb in Europe.
Ginkgo Biloba is also an extremely well-researched herb, having been the subject of hundreds of studies. It is currently most renowned for its positive effects on brain function and circulation.
Research shows that it increases blood flow to the brain and increases the body’s production of energy molecules boosting the brain’s metabolism of glucose. Ginkgo Biloba extract may also raise oxygen levels in brain tissues, and therefore may delay the onset of Alzheimer’s. One study concluded that standardized Ginkgo Biloba extract should be considered equally effective as some of the medications in the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, yet without the adverse side effects.
It is also full of antioxidants, Vitamin C and carotenoids, and German researchers found that as a powerful antioxidant it may prevent hardening of the arteries.
Researchers also found that treatment with Ginkgo Biloba extracts improved circulation to the extremities, ear and eyes. It regulates tone and elasticity of blood vessels, from smallest of capillaries to the largest of arteries.
