DHEA

What is DHEA?

DHEA (De-hydro-epiandrosterone) is a hormone made by your adrenal glands and is a precursor to estrogens and androgens.

DHEA levels are highest in your early adulthood, progressively dropping to 10% into your 60’s.  DHEA is thought to be a rejuvenating hormone.  A double-blind study of healthy elderly subjects were given 50mg a day of DHEA for one year, their levels of DHEAS were restored with testosterone, estrogens and other hormones increasing too.  Bone mineral losses were reduced in women, significant increases in libido were reported, and improvements in skin quality were observed in terms of pigments, hydration, thickness and production of sebum oils.

Benefits and Uses of DHEA

DHEA deficiency occurs in people with insulin dependent diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, asthma, dementia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, osteoporosis, and a number of other conditions.  In most cases, the reason for the deficiency is not understood, and supplementing with DHEA has variable results.

Supplementing with DHEA has produced effective clinical evidence for female infertility, improving bone density in osteoporosis, infertility, anti-aging, improving immunity, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and even in weight loss studies.  For example when women with adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s Disease) were treated with 50mg of DHEA daily over four months, their DHEA/S levels, which were deficient, returned to normal, and they reported significant improvements in their well-being and sexuality.

A few clinical trials of 50mg to 90mg of DHEA over 2 to 6 months have consistently produced significant reductions in depression severity and occurrences in men and women.  DHEA may also play some role in protecting against depression. Other researchers have reported dramatic reductions in depression at extremely high amounts of DHEA given for six weeks to adults who first became depressed after age 40 in a double-blind trial.

DHEA Dosage

50mg per day.

What are the side effects with DHEA?

DHEA is produced naturally in the human body.  As a relatively new supplement, its long term side effects are as yet unknown. Mild Side effects at higher intakes of 100 mg to 200 mg per day could include acne, increased facial hair, increase in perspiration, changes in menstrual cycle, high blood pressure, or upset stomach.

Several studies note that the incidence of side effects are minimal. A 24 week study at a dose of 200 mg/day noted only slight androgenic effects. Another study at 400 mg/day for 8 weeks noted few adverse effects. A longer term study at 50 mg/day of DHEA for 12 months reported only a small number of side effects with low severity. Yet another study at a dose of 50 mg for 10 months reported no serious adverse events.

To be cautious, pregnant women or breast-feeding, or have hormone sensitive conditions, liver problems, diabetes, depression or mood disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), hypertension or cholesterol problems, may wish to consult with a doctor before taking.  Since some hormones are known to promote cancer it may be wise for people with breast, prostate, uterine cancer or a family history of these conditions to avoid supplementing with DHEA at least until more is known about any longer term cancer effects.

Are there any drug interactions?

Some medicines may interact with dehydroepiandrosterone. Refer to drug interactions for a list of those medicines.

DHEA should not be used with tamoxifen, as it may promote tamoxifen resistance. Patients on hormone replacement therapy may have more estrogen-related side effects when taking DHEA. This supplement may also interfere with other medicines, and potential interactions between it and drugs and herbs should be considered. It is a good idea to consult with your doctor before taking DHEA.
