What is 5-HTP Tryptophan?

Tryptophan is converted to 5-hydroxy tryptophan in the body from where it can then be converted into the potent brain neurotransmitter serotonin. 5-htp is also the precursor forthe sleep hormone melatonin.

Together melatonin and serotonin help to promote a calm mood and helps to treat insomnia. Although Trytophan can be found in a variety of protein rich foods, such as chicken, fish, beef and dairy products, no significant amounts of 5 htp are present.

5 hydroxy-tryptophan (5-htp) is primarily a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan.
